Gimme Shelter!

We LOVE Rubbermaid Bins! They come in great sizes with plenty of floor space. They're lightweight, which makes them VERY easy to clean. There tough, Rubbermaid bins are one of the few containers we can actually keep around the farm, they wear VERY well, even against a few Pei nibbles! A great extra for your Hedgie's house is a heating pad! Hedgies love to get cozy, and they're sure to move their sleeping quarters right on top of it! A MUST HAVE FOR ALL HEDGIES: The exercise wheel! It is so important for your Hedgies to get exercise everyday. The best way to do this is to get them a 11-12" solid surface exercise wheel, we have them in our store for $20!

Dinner & Drinks!

Hedgehogs eat a number of things. Just like you and I, Hedgies have favorite foods too! Part of their diet you may already have in your own kitchen! We use Purina Naturals plus vitamins & minerals (for it's high protein, lower fat content) mixed with meal worms (their favorite) as their base diet. We also add daily, some type of green (spinach, kale, mustard, collards or cabbage...NO LETTUCE) and we alternate soft fruits & cooked veggies daily. Our herd has a hankering for sweet potatoes, carrots, apples, strawberries & bananas. A variation in their daily diet will also help to stimulate your Hedgie, it's easy to get board in a cage! Hedgies will eat about a 1/3 of their body weight a day, which means the amount of food they will need a day will change over time. We've found it best to put a little extra, just in case!

All of our Hedgehogs are raised on a water bottle. We've found over time that dishes are both a drowning hazard and are a perfect dirty bedding collector! Water bottles are safe, and easy to clean!

Privacy Please!

Just like you, Hedgies like to feel safe and secure, unlike you, they prefer to sleep during daytime hours. A hide can provide some much needed darkness and privacy! We use "Hedggie Hides" that are warm, cozy, washable and durable that will be available soon. They'll be priced with you in mind, so buy a few and you'll have a fresh one while your washing! You can also use free stuff from around the house! Empty x-large garbage bag boxes, Kleenex or postal boxes!

Comfort!

There are a ton of beddings on the market for small animals. There are several things to look for when buying bedding, here are the important ones...Is it safe? Small particle bedding like corn cob and ground walnut present a perfect opportunity for small pieces to get lodged or stuck in your Hedgies private parts area. Is it toxic? Please be sure to read the packaging and additives on your bedding. Even those labeled for pet use are harmful or even deadly to some species! We dump all of the bedding from each cage every week, then spray/wipe down the bins, wheel, toys, food bowel and water bottle with a pet friendly sanitizer, rinse, dry and refill! We recommend picking up poop daily with a paper towel when you feed your Hedgies, this helps keep your Hedgies house basically smell free!

Need the whole Set-Up?

If your looking for a complete set-up for your new hoglet, we carry them! They include a large floor space tub, 12" solid suface running wheel, double food dish, water bottle, bedding, super sleeper pouch, staple diet, mealworms and helpful care sheet.

Hedgie Hygiene!

Just like us, Hedgies have personal needs to stay clean and healthy. Baths and nail clipping are needed regularly to keep your hog from being the stinky kid on the block, lol! If you decide to use a shampoo, which we don't encourage, dilute 1/4 teaspoon of baby oatmeal shampoo into 1 gallon of safely warm water. Be sure to rinse it completely clear of your hedgies skin and quills. Lightly pat them dry and keep them in a warm place until they dry completely. For nail trimings, we've found that cutical trimers work perfectly when your hedgie is placed on a flat surface! Trim them much as you would  dog nails, being sure not to get too close to the quick.

Potty Training?

Yes it's true...well for the most part anyway. Some Hedgies are prone to relieve themselves in the same area of their cage every time...with or without the litter box. Almost all of ours do! But even with a little encouragement and effort on our part, well...some just won't.
